Movie Masterpiece Octopus

Greetings heroes/citizen.”I’m the Octopus, I got eight of everything”. Yeah, that’s one of the memorable lines that always playing in my mind if I hold this action figure. While people are talking about how their Predator 1 series from Hot Toys are soooo great,me on the other hand was seeking for a less popular action figure. Not that I have problem with the Predator 1 or the fans, but that’s me. I always try to stay away from the popular items and wait for it too cool down a bit and if it still available on sale I’ll get it. If not then it’s okay, it’s not the end of the world.

But, I always get the thing I like even if it’s really popular that time. So, it’s clear that Predator is not my favorite series. Nyway, back to this action figure Hot Toys Movie Masterpiece Octopus from the movie, The Spirit. The movie was not as popular as The Dark Knight,Iron Man or Transformers, thus making this action figure also not as popular as the rest of the toylines from the movies I mentioned earlier. I got this with a very good deal, thanks to the popularity issue. Retail price is around $130 to $145, or something like that.

Packaging; normal Hot Toys 12″ figures box, with outer sleeve. The images on both the box and sleeve are the real Samuel L Jackson images from the movie, not the toy. The sleeve have some grainy texture on it, like a very fine sand paper. The sleeve slide on and off quite easily. I noticed that the figure was laid on the black plastic tray, in a bit of posing position, not just laid dead on the tray. So it nice to see him even if it’s MISB.

Sculpt/design; the headsculpt is so mind-blowing impressive, the accuracy and the details of the headsculpt is epic! No, don’t compare this with MMS DX Joker headsculpt, but notice the resemblance of Samuel L Jackson’s face sculpted here, it’s so realistic. Although the resemblance is not the issue here, but personally I would like to see a more fierce looking Octopus, this headsculpt portray the Octopus as a friendly looking killer.An evil grin on the face should do the trick.

There is no extra hands/gloves that came with him. So, what they did was they sculpt the gloves so that it can hold all the different weapons. It’s not a good idea I think,because there are smaller weapons like the pistols which have a smaller hand grip. Not a big problem but it make him looks fake while holding the pistols.

What I like the most about this action figure is not the crazy looking weapons, but the outfit his wearing. Yeah, what can be more cool outfit for a badass killer like him to wear than what he’s wearing?! The coat itself is trully a piece of art, the background color is light purple not the darker purple. The pattern was printed on the fabric. The fur act like a real 1:1 thing. The tailoring of the outfit is marvelous, no problem at all. The necktie’s not that he’s wearing cannot be untied, you have to remove the head to take it off.

Underneath the coat, he’s wearing a red long sleeves shirt. The pants is made of plastic leather, very soft but it’s a bit flexible at the same time. Before I forgot, there is a thin wire inside the edge of the coat, at the bottom so you can display him with more style. The boots are made of hard rubber, so there is no chance for you to move the ankles. I consider the hat only as a complement, it doesn’t give a huge impact to the overall looks of the figure.

P.O.A: because it uses Trutype body so there is no problem if we talk about points of articulations. Because the boots are made of hard plastic, it made the movement of the ankle impossible. The pants although it is made of pleather,it does not interfere very much the movement of the legs, but it does limited your choice of posing the action figure a bit.

Colors; I love the pattern and colors on the coat it looks just like the real coat octopus is wearing on the movie. Colors on the headsculpt and gloves are detail and I have no complain at all, the same goes to the boots also.

Accessories; Hot Toys don’t want us just to buy Octopus just because he have more weapons and all that. So they cleverly separate the custom huge guns.If you want the second guns you have to buy Spirit because he will come with it. The guns consist of 2 M4 assault riffle, an Uzi SMG and probably a custom shotgun, maybe REM870 SPAS12. The guns is glued to each other (there are thin plastic tubing to hold them apart) and a black flexicuffs holding them together. These weapons are not unique as it just a kitbash of Hot Toys firearms set. Other weapons that can be considered as unique for Octopus is a pair of 4 barrel shotgun and a pair of pistols, revolver maybe?? The pistols is clearly a bit out of proportion, the barrels are too big. A furry hat and a display stand ( I didn’t put the pole in the pictures, but it came with it).

Overall I think this action figure is worth the money I paid for it. I even think I paid it way below the price of the satisfaction I got from it. Great sculpt, loads of accessories and great tailoring job, I think after playing this action figure Octopus will not be lonely, I’ll definitely will get Spirit.
